Chazzan Stephen Cotsen

Stephen grew up in Cardiff and studied Chazzanut with Chazan Zvi Finkelstein z"l in Cardiff and at Jews' College London. He has previously been the Chazan at the Hackney and the Mill Hill Synagogues (United Synagogue).

In 1995 Stephen joined the New London Synagogue as a member, having been an admirer of the writings of Rabbi Dr Louis Jacobs z"l for many years. A short time later, he became Headteacher of the Cheder, a position he held for four years. When Chazan George Rothschild retired in 1999, Stephen was invited to succeed him as Chazan.

He also serves the Synagogue as its Community Director, and his responsibilities include developing liturgical, torah reading and haftarah skills within the community, editing the Synagogue's weekly email updates, co-ordinating the Bar/Bat Mitzvah Programme, maintaining the web site and supporting the work of the various committees.
