A Masorti service is held within the Oxford
Jewish Congregation, at the Oxford Jewish Centre, Richmond Road,
on the last Shabbat of every month.
Our services are conducted using the
traditional Hebrew liturgy in the Singer siddur. Our minhag is
to hold egalitarian services with men and women sitting together
and participating equally in all parts of the service - an
approach which is permitted within the Masorti interpretation of
Halacha.
Our service begins at 9.45am and at its end we
join the rest of the congregation who have been attending the
traditional orthodox service, in reflecting the ethos of the
Oxford Community, for a communal kiddush. Our atmosphere is
relaxed. Those who want to listen are welcomed equally with
those who are able and willing to take an active part in the
service - at any level, for example, leading a portion of the
service, layening, hagbah or galilah or reciting the prayer for
the Royal family in English. We also encourage the children to
participate in leading the singing of Adon Olam and in helping
to dress the Torah.
We are delighted to welcome all visitors, and
if you would like to let us know you are coming, or would like
further information, please do not hesitate to contact us at e-mail address:
masorti@ojc-online.org.
